New figures reveal that during the first year of the Andrews Government, average response times for ambulances are now longer in many regional centres, when compared to a year earlier.
“Daniel Andrews has been in charge for well over a year now and needs to stop blaming others for ambulance response times getting worse in Geelong” Shadow Parliamentary Secretary for Women’s Health & Rural and Regional Health, Margaret Fitzherbert MLC said.
“If it’s not in a marginal seat in Melbourne, then it doesn’t matter to the Andrews Government” Ms Fitzherbert said.
Code 2 call-outs in the Geelong region have blown out by nearly two minutes, and Code 1 response times have increased by 2 minutes 8 seconds in both the Corangamite and Queenscliff regions.
Andrew Katos, Member for South Barwon believes this is an issue of life or death. Before the election, Daniel Andrews told us there was an ambulance crisis, yet under him ambulance response times have gone backwards in Geelong.
“Geelong patients are suffering because Daniel Andrews has failed to invest in ambulance services despite all of his promises. He is all talk and no action.” said Mr Katos.
These figures reflect a state-wide trend in regional and rural areas, with first response times for Code 1 call-outs (patients who require urgent paramedic and hospital care) having worsened in 13 regional local government areas.
First response times for Code 2 call-outs (acute incidents not requiring a lights and siren response) increased in half the regional centres that were measured (18 of the 36).
Average response time for Code 1 call-outs, measured in minutes:
|Regional Local Government Area||1/10/14 – 31/12/14||1/10/15 – 31/12/15|
|Corangamite||20:10 minutes||22:18 minutes|
|Queenscliff||16:38 minutes||18:46 minutes|
Average response time for Code 2 call-outs, measured in minutes:
|Regional Centre||1/10/14 – 31/12/14||1/10/15 – 31/12/15|
|Geelong||25:00 minutes||26:59 minutes|
“Minister Jill Hennessy and Daniel Andrews promised improved response times-sadly this is another broken promise from the Andrews government” Andrew Katos remarked.
