The Victorian Coalition Government’s Taxi Rank Safety Program is once again open for applications, Member for South Barwon, Andrew Katos announced today.
“Since 2011 the program has provided funding of almost $2 million to 28 councils to facilitate upgrades and improvements to local taxi ranks,” Mr Katos said.
“This year the Coalition Government has made $400,000 available for local councils to make improvements that will benefit the local community.
Mr Katos said that he was pleased to see the program was once again available.
“The taxi rank safety program is a great opportunity for local councils to upgrade the local taxi ranks,” Mr Katos said.
“In recent years, Surf Coast Shire Council has received $3,100 in funding that has helped improve taxi ranks within the shire and I encourage the shire to apply again to upgrade even more taxi ranks.
The program allows councils to apply for funding to cover projects from seating, shelters, CCTV systems and lighting through to footpath upgrades.
“I invite Surf Coast Shire Council to consider any improvements to existing taxi ranks or the establishment of any new sites that may be required in the area.
Minister for Public Transport Terry Mulder said the TRSP is important contribution to making sure the travelling public feel safe and secure when waiting for taxis.
“Safety in transport is a high priority for this government and that’s why we continue to offer this program year after year.
“I encourage all community groups, businesses and taxi companies with an interest in the program to contact their local council about lodging an application,” Mr Mulder said.
The TRSP is administered by the Taxi Services Commission. Applications for funding close on 12 December 2014.
