Intersection of Beach Road & Surf Coast Hwy Signalisation

The Victorian Coalition made a commitment at the 2014 State Election to continue with the successful Country Roads & Bridges Program which would have seen the accident prone intersection of Beach Rd and the Surf Coast Hwy signalised.

The Andrews’ Labor Government made no funding commitment to signalise this intersection and has, in fact, cut the $160 million Country Roads & Bridges Program. This callous funding cut will see the Surf Coast Shire lose $1 million per year in funding for our local roads.

I join our community in calling for the Labor Minister for Roads, Luke Donnellan, to provide the $598,000 shortfall to fund the desperately needed improvements to this intersection

It should also be noted that the Surf Coast Shire wears some of the blame for this intersection not being signalised.

In 2014 the Shire was given support and approval from the then Minister for Roads, Terry Mulder, to use money from the Country Roads & Bridges program to fund the signalisation of this intersection.

Rather than getting on with the job of fixing one of Torquay’s most dangerous and frustrating intersections, the Surf Coast Shire rolled the political dice in an election year and lost.

Both the State Government and the Surf Coast Shire need to take responsibility for these works and fund this important intersection upgrade immediately.
