Katos call on Councils to ban cage fighting

Member for South Barwon, Andrew Katos is calling upon the Surf Coast Shire and the City of Greater Geelong to introduce local laws to ban cage fighting from within their municipalities.

In Parliament last week questions were asked regarding allowing Councils to introduce new local laws to ban cage fighting in their Municipalities.

Minister for Local Government Natalie Hutchins responded advising that local governments are sovereign bodies.  They can introduce their own by-laws, and if they choose to do so, they the right to do so.

Various medical, police and family violence experts have called on Daniel Andrews not to re-introduce laws that allow cage fighting.

The Surf Coast Shire banned circuses with caged animals from performing on council-owned land in December last year.

Quotes attributable to Member for South Barwon, Andrew Katos

“Numerous experts in medicine and family violence as well as police have all called on Daniel Andrews not to re-introduce cage fighting.”

“As Daniel Andrews is failing to listen to the experts, and failing to show leadership on this issue, it is now up to our overworked local governments to step in and show the leadership on this issue that Daniel Andrews won’t.”

“If the Surf Coast Shire doesn’t want caged animals surely you wouldn’t want two men in a cage fighting each other,”
