The Liberal-Nationals Coalition introduced the Country Roads and Bridges Program for the safety of people in rural communities to fix deteriorating and dangerous local roads.

Over the past four years rural shires including the Surf Coast Shire received about $1 million a year so they can repair their local roads and bridges.

Sadly, the Melbourne-focused Andrews Labor Government plans to cut the program.

This leaves rural shires around $1 million short every single year. They will either need to sacrifice other community projects, raise local rates, or simply undertake less roads and bridge maintenance.

This week Daniel Andrews tried to hide the fact he has axed the Country Roads and Bridges Program by announcing two programs for “country” bridges and level crossings. The programs are actually for works on major regional networks, and will not help rural shires with local priority needs.

Daniel Andrews is trying to mislead rural Victorians, while at the same time splashing the cash in Melbourne – $11 billion on the Melbourne Metro Rail project, $8 billion to remove Melbourne level crossings, and $100 million to upgrade Melbourne’s Flinders Street Station.

Daniel Andrews needs to end his desperate stunts and deliver fair funding for regional Councils.
