Member for South Barwon launches on-line petition: Stop PEP 163 unconventional gas fracking on the Surf Coast

Andrew Katos, Member for South Barwon launched an on-line petition calling upon the Surf Coast community to tell the Andrews Labor Government NOT to support unconventional gas exploration in sensitive environmental areas of the Surf Coast Shire.

Mr Katos said that the massive exploration zone known as PEP 163 covers areas of significant population growth and could put residents, local communities, farmland and our local environment at risk.

“Large scale gas industry and hydraulic fracking should not be part of our Shire and may put at risk agriculture, tourism, and water resources,” Mr Katos said.

The Victorian Coalition put in place a moratorium on fracking and unconventional gas exploration in 2012 and supports an extension of Victoria’s onshore gas moratorium until 30 June 2020.

“The Liberal-Nationals Coalition position supports local communities who don’t want Daniel Andrews to rush out and make any ill-informed decisions.”

Mr Katos advises that Premier Daniel Andrews and his Energy and Resources Minister will decide by the 18th October 2015 whether to grant an extension to an onshore gas exploration licence in the Surf Coast Shire.

“If you share my concern at the prospect of fracking unconventional gas on the Surf Coast please add your voice to my online petition at http://andrewkatos.com.au/StopPep163/
