The Surf Coast Shire has finally announced that they will be implementing traffic lights at the intersection of Beach Road and the Surf Coast Highway following TAC funding for a roundabout at South Beach Road Intersection.
The Shire funding was earmarked for a roundabout at South Beach Road Intersection but $600,000 will be reallocated for funding of traffic light implementation to the dangerous Beach Road, Surf Coast Highway Intersection.
“It’s great that finally this intersection will be fixed–and with growth continuing to occur in Torquay, businesses, locals and tourists could all see that this intersection needed to be fixed. This is a big win for the community”. Andrew Katos, Member for South Barwon said.
Andrew Katos, Member for South Barwon, earlier this year launched a petition, gathering hundreds of signatures and gaining wide spread support from locals, tourists and businesses in the Torquay area.
“At no stage of my campaign to fix Beach Road, whether it was at the launch of my petition, collecting signatures or presenting my petition to Parliament did the Shire offer any support to fix this intersection” Mr Katos highlights.
After presenting the petition to Parliament, and receiving more signatures each day, Mr Katos believes that the Council and the Victorian Government were more interested in playing party politics than ensuring safety for locals and visitors in Torquay.
Andrew Katos MP, has been calling on the Shire and Victorian Government to fix this intersection, and recognises that it should have been done years ago.
He notes that “the Surf Coast Shire should have fixed this intersection in 2014 when they had the funding from the previous Coalition Government’s Country Roads and Bridges Program. Instead of listening to the local community and getting on with it they were too busy playing party politics and funded other projects”
“I thank all members of the community who supported my campaign to signalise Beach Road, Surf Coast Highway Intersection”.
